Faculty spotlight: Clayberg and Rubel

Two of EclipseWorld's most popular instructors are Eric Clayberg and Dan Rubel. Want to know more about them?

Eric Clayberg is a software technologist, product developer, entrepreneur and manager with Instantiations. He has more than 18 years of commercial software development experience, including 11 years of experience with Java and eight years with Eclipse. Mr. Clayberg is the primary author and architect of more than a dozen commercial Java and Smalltalk add-on products, including WindowBuilder Pro, CodePro and the award-winning VA Assist Enterprise product lines.

Mr. Clayberg holds a B.S. degree from M.I.T and an M.B.A. from Harvard, and has co-founded two successful software companies. He is co-author of the book “Eclipse: Building Commercial-Quality Plugins,” part of the Addison-Wesley Eclipse series.

Dan Rubel is an entrepreneur and an expert in the design and application of object-oriented technologies with more than 15 years of commercial software development experience, including 10 years of experience with Java and six years with Eclipse. He’s the primary architect and product manager at Instantiations for RCP Developer, WindowTester and RCP Packager, and has played key design and leadership roles in other commercial products such as WindowBuilder Pro, VA Assist and CodePro Studio.

Mr. Rubel specializes in Eclipse product development, including code analysis and RCP construction tools, and is co-author of “Eclipse: Building Commercial-Quality Plugins.”

This is one of the sessions that they'll be teaching:

Tuesday, Oct. 28, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
W-2 Building Commercial-Quality Eclipse Plugins
By Eric Clayberg and Dan Rubel

The best way to extend the power of Eclipse-based tools is by building plugins—and this workshop provides the best education from the top experts: the guys who literally wrote the book on the subject.

In addition to introducing the basics of plugin development, the instructors will show you how to add the sophistication and “polish” that your end users demand. In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of plugin development, with specific solutions for the challenges participants will most likely encounter. Session content is based on the newly released third edition of the best-selling book co-authored by Clayberg and Rubel, “Eclipse: Building Commercial-Quality Plugins,” and is split between lecture and hands-on lab work. The workshop has been updated to encompass the Eclipse 3.4 “Ganymede” platform! (Please bring a laptop with Eclipse installed.)

Epiphanies of Patterns!

Here's a workshop that you won't want to miss:

Tuesday, Oct. 28, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
W-3 Epiphanies of Patterns! (Smarter and More Efficient Java Development)
By Joe Toomey and Scott Schneider

Scott Schneider and Joseph Toomey will lead the wandering and weary toward their own epiphany on the value of pattern-enabling technologies in the Java development process. Workshop attendees will learn to become smarter and more efficient Java developers in their daily programming practice, whether they’re solo-coding cowboys or rank-and-file team collaborators. The workshop forms around three basic tenets that establish the theme of the content:

1. Automating the mundane (because programmers are in general lazy beasts)
2. Preserving the goodness (because the goodness is, well... er… good)
3. Engaging your environment (you and your Eclipse as one fine-tuned being)

A short historical and cross-disciplinary treatment on patterns will be covered followed by a constructive hands-on journey in identifying, codifying and subsequently applying Eclipse environmental and Java code-level design and implementation patterns.

This workshop will cover the latest and greatest efficiency-boosting features of the Eclipse environment as well as the important next-generation code-generation technologies such as JET2 and xPand that are becoming the tools of choice in automating the mundane and preserving the goodness. You can participate in the workshop individually or elect to be part of paired-programmer teams that will work together through the hands-on labs.

Mike M's keynote!

Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, has sent along a description of his keynote address.

Your Eclipse Community

The Eclipse open source community has been a resounding success by almost every measure. In terms of market share, commercial adoption, industry impact and community participation it has historically been a home run. But relentless innovation is a requirement for any software platform in today’s world and Eclipse is no exception. The next few years are going to be hugely important to everyone involved (however peripherally) in the Eclipse ecosystem. Not only is there going to be significant platform evolution under the auspices of the Eclipse 4.0 project, but there are ever-increasing calls for growing participation and diversity across Eclipse’s projects. Now is your time to look at how you can become involved as a full contributor to the Eclipse community.

His bio:

Mike Milinkovich is the Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. In the past, he has held key management positions with Oracle, WebGain, The Object People, and Object Technology International Inc. (which subsequently became a wholly-owned subsidiary of IBM), assuming responsibility for development, product management, marketing, strategic planning, finance and business development.

Do you like martinis?

Personally, I'm not a martini drinker — but that's okay, because I'm going to have a good time at Martini Mix Madness, on Tuesday evening at EclipseWorld.

Thank you, Oracle, for sponsoring this great party:

After a long day of EclipseWorld Workshops, relax at Oracle’s MARTINI MIX MADNESS. Oracle’s expert staff will be on hand to answer technical questions, and provide one-to-one software demonstrations, while you enjoy Oracle hospitality and network with your peers and the Oracle presenters. We encourage you to register on mix.oracle.com to join the conversation before and after the conference.

Don't miss Ivar Jacobson!

Ivar Jacobson — famous as one of the Three Amigos behind the Unified Modeling Language and the Rational Unified Process — is our special afternoon keynote on Wed., Oct. 29.

His keynote is called "Be Smart!" He describes it as:

One of the most popular buzzwords in software development is agile. Today everyone wants to be agile. That is good! However, being agile is not enough. For several years Dr. Ivar Jacobson has expressed that the most important character you need to have to be a great software developer is to be smart. What does that mean? Most people know intuitively what “being smart” means in everyday language, but what does it mean for software. In this session, Dr. Ivar Jacobson will describe what it means to be smart when it comes to developing software from requirements through to deployment.
